Gates of Mordor,  Tibesti Mountains, Southern Libya

12 x 16 inches,   gouache,    2006

A commissioned painting showing a moment during a camel-supported geological field trip made by the artist and a colleague in 1974.  We were undertaking geological reconnaissance work along an un-named wadi cutting through high cliffs of volcanic rhyolite, in the northern Tibesti Mountains of Southern Libya.  These trips lasted several days and were carried out using camels when motor transport was impossible in this mountainous region south of the Sahara Desert near the border with Chad.
